You have always heard that learning English is one of the most important things you can do to succeed in your life. Some of your friends have talked about it as the language that will allow you to travel around the world, increase your salary or even have better opportunities to find the job you really want. And yes, all the things you have heard about it are true, yet you are still afraid of starting with your first English lesson.
So, what things do you need to consider before starting this journey and what is your role in them? Let’s figure it out:
- Do not be afraid of making mistakes
As a learner, you must look at mistakes as new opportunities. Every time you make a mistake means that you are trying something new that you haven’t used before and that you are using your creativity to incorporate it into your language. You must keep trying harder until you master the new structures and feel confident in using them every day.
- Discipline, discipline, and more discipline.
To achieve your goals, you need to be disciplined in what you are doing. Learning a language and reaching a new level of proficiency requires a certain number of hours of practice. Think of you as a marathon runner, to finish the marathon you need to train daily. Same goes with learning English, if you want to fulfill your dreams be disciplined and practice every day.
- Set SMART Goals
Have you ever heard about SMART Goals? These are essential to get what you want, in this case learning English. SMART GOALS mean:
- Specific: Define a specific and clear goal. This is your main purpose.
- Measurable: Make sure you can track your progress. Take that previous test again and compare the results.
- Attainable: Create a goal that you can accomplish. You cannot pass from A1 to C1 level in a week.
- Relevant: Your goals should align with your long-term objectives. For example, once I get a C1 Level I will be able to apply to that job I always wanted in the UK.
- Time-based: You need to set a target date to accomplish your tasks. This will increase your motivation because you will know that at the end of this process you are going to be a different person.
4. It’s all about having the courage and being constant
You are brave, you are amazing, and you are always learning but you need to take the first step. Your role here is to become the manager of your learning process, get out of your comfort zone and face the real opportunities that are outside for you to practice your English skills. You could go to a pub that you don’t know and start speaking everything in English. I bet you are going to find someone that wants to share their knowledge and progress with you.
Finally, remember that being an active participant in your learning process will help you to succeed in this long but fantastic opportunity that is to learn a new language, where you are going to be able to open your mind and help your brain to stay healthy.
